January saw the first bite of Winter recede from northern Scotland. The passing of the snow left behind some spectacularly clear night skys. This rekindled my interest in astronomy, so I spent some time experimenting with shooting some images of the night sky without specialised equipment.
My first night out was spent trying to capture images of Jupiter. By combining my usual wildlife lens (EF 100-400L) with a 2x convertor I was able to produce a passable image by stacking multiple exposures. I was pretty excited that I managed to capture the four moons as well as Jupiter itself. The picture below shows the shot I captured alongside an image generated by the

The next few clear nights I decided to concentrate upon the Milky Way. By shooting long exposures using a wide angle lens I was able to produce a reasonable picture. Even out in the countryside I was having trouble with light pollution, but the final result is still my photograph of the month:
